Men’s ideas, though, continue to run in the old channels about oysters as well as God and war and women.

I’m a writer, oyster enthusiast, and a New Yorker, with a penchant for good friends, good drink, and great food. Ideally all at the same time.
After years of eating oysters without much thought at all, I began to crave an understanding of the things I was putting in my mouth. I knew there were different types (East Coast and West, right?) and I knew they tasted differently and looked differently, but after that? I was pretty much lost.
Here’s the thing: learning about a thing changes your experience of it. If you know every fashion label then people look different as they walk down the street and if you know the names of every tree, flower, or bush you pass by, then an afternoon stroll is a richer endeavor.
And so it goes with oysters. At least for me it has. The more I learned, the more I enjoy them, and I’m hoping–and betting–that the same will be true for you.
Help Save our Harbor!
If you care about the environment, and the NYC Harbor in specific, then the Billion Oyster Project are the people to support. With the goal of planting one billion oysters int the New York City harbor, they are nearly single-handedly bringing oysters back along with educating students and adults alike as to the benefit of replenishing our harbors. They’re a fantastic organization, and I was lucky enough to spend a few days last summer volunteering with them.
If you have the time, I suggest signing up to spend a day out on Governor’s Island lending a hand. And, of course, donations are always appreciated as well.
